[gameblog] Suikoden V (spoilers behind the cut)
Forced to gameblog because I have nobody to fangirl this over with. *gnaws Mich for only getting her PS2 back now* And I have not fangirled this much while playing a game in so long. Konami has made up for GenSui III & IV a hundred fold with V. And I'm not even one of those people that disliked the previous two games, I just did not have overwhelming love for either (though I am one of the few who wanted to kill Luc in III. I'm still not sure why people like him in it. I liked him better in the first and second game). I can't really compare to I and II, since it's been years since I played both games, but I've not loved a Suikoden hero since McDohl. In fact, I'd go so far to say I like the prince better. ♥ McDohl gets + points in the way fond memories make your love eternal.
Did I mention I have a shameless schoolgirl crush on the prince? And this is the only game wherein I was even remotely envious of a videogame character BECAUSE. *__* And then I kind of laughed my head off silly a few moments later because I actually went "Waah! So JEALOUS!" at my tv screen while fangirling like whoa.
Also, IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THIS GAME YET WHY HAVEN'T YOU?!~ omg. *shoots you all to play it*
Random, disjointed reactions all the way up to the Queen's Campaign. I have not gone beyond that, so no spoilers please. I'm currently trading before heading over to Sauronix Castle.
Game Mechanics
♠ I like trading in Suikoden, and in Suikoden IV especially, it was my major moneymaker. I traded for a few hours in SuikoV and found it a bit more tedious without really knowing why until I finally figured it was most likely because you actually need to be in the world map now to use the Blinking Mirror. If I recall right, you could use the mirror anywhere in town in Suiko IV, which made going from town to town a lot faster, then having to run in, then having to run back out. I still trade though. I like my potch. XD
♠ While I'm happy to see the skill system from SuikoIII (one of my favorite factors from that game), two skill slots make me cry. ;__; The epic skills make me happy, but... I CAN'T USE THEM YET. *twitch*
♠ Also happy to see that the rune magic combos from Suiko IV made it in.
♠ I am not as pleased with the war battles. In this regard, I think I liked Suiko III's the most, and I enjoyed the rune cannon battles of IV. Though I think my main gripe about the war battle in V is the real time movement. It took me blundering through three full battles before I got accustomed to it. =/ The duels however, are love. <3 Though I kind of indignantly gah'd! at the timer when I first saw it. XD
♠ Formations make me happy. :D
Events and other things
♠ @^#$%^ We all knew Georg killed Ferid and Arshtat, what with that scene between Ferid and Georg. But I was not expecting Arshtat to have killed Ferid. LOVELOVELOVE this scene. Gods I love Ferid. ;___; The look on his face in those last moments. *weeps* I want to marry a guy like him.
♠ Scene after the duel with Miakis, when the prince hugs her? *ENVIES MADLY* I adore Miakis, she teased Lym so much. :D Never a dull moment with her for sure. Also, just one of manymany scenes where I fangirled over the prince kthnxs.
♠ Leknaat finally. And my Star tablet, finally. Also, I'd really love an explanation on Jeane and Zerase please. =/
♠ The scene between the prince and Arshtat in her chambers. ♥ Nearly made me cry, because we all knew what was coming. :( I love it when the prince smiles.
♠ Galleon and Silva! Their history. I demand to know! :O
♠ What is up with Killey anyway. Arrogant bastard. Can't wait to get him. XD
♠ Dragon horse cavalry! ♥ ♥ ♥ Actually, I can't believe I stopped to gameblog just when I was about to go meet them. *fangirl glee!*
♠ !#$%$ Thanks to Lyon nearly dying, I am now without my prosperity set for an indefinite amount of time. ;______; My poootch.
♠ GRRRR. Cathari recruitment. EVEN MORE QUESTIONS. One of these days, they have to release a guidebook that answers all the questions you're given while playing ALL of their games.
Characters
♠ Oh gods. With a cast like this, where does one even start? With the exception of oh, probably Salum Barows, I've liked everyone thus far. Even dorky, dinky Euram, because he amuses me. So... picking a handful of characters.
♠ The Prince. > The amount of fangirling I've done in regards to the prince alone is shameless. Much as I liked Geddoe. Much as I adored Kyril (though I suppose Kyril doesn't really count?). As true and loyal as I am to the memory of McDohl. He is my favorite Suikoden hero to date. I can't quite explain where the love is coming from, as anyone who's ever played Suikoden (with the exception of 3) knows that the hero never talks and most of whatever personality the hero has is all left to player perspective and how you perceive him. But his personality is right there despite him not talking and everything and anything that he does makes me fangirl each and every time. <3
♠ Ferid > Ferid is coolness. He is what every king should aspire to be. *biased* The Prince takes after his father. ♥ I love the scene in the beginning where Ferid all but crushes the prince when they arrive from Lordlake. :D
♠ Georg Prime > What's in a name... snerk. I adore Georg. Truly. So annoyed that I don't get to play him for a good part of the game while he goes offgallivanting gathering information.
♠ Josephine > :DDDDD Josephine was a character that I refused to take out of my party during the entire first half of my game. Fashion diva extraordinare, and first female Red Rose rune bearer. She does decent melee damage, and is one of the better mage characters early on in the game. I like how well rounded she is, and nothing beats smacking enemies with a frilly pink parasol. Other than the hero, Lyon and Sialeeds, Josephine had the most accumulated individual SP points of my Stars. Have opted to leave her out more to level my other characters up though. :(
Cutting this short because I really want to get my cavalry knights now. :D

Random, icon love for Yuber!puff. :D
As for the plot, definitely not. The plot can stand alone, if you understand the basic Suikoden concept that there are 108 people in the world that bear the name and destiny of one of the 108 stars. (Hint: It's like Pokemon - gotta collect 'em all if you want the best ending!) Your hero is one of these stars, and he goes through the game collecting the support of the other stars for some kind of revolt against the powers that be. There are a few characters that recur from the previous games, and a few tiny references to previous games, but nothing that reallly would impair your gaming experience if you just start with Suiko5.
So, in short, go for it!
There are a lot of interesting characters in the game. If I had bothered to say something about all the characters I liked the post would be really long.
Dragonquest VIII. :DDD I have yet to finish this game, though I fully plan to do so. Right after I've gotten Suiko5 (replays included) and Shadows Hearts 3 out of the way.

I'm sure it would have been a great long post to read :DD *nods!*
I hope your PS2 get fixed soon ;__; Will put Dragonquest VIII at the end, so could maybe finish it around the same time as you XD;
